The thunderous beat of drums echoed through the Chung Te Memorial Hall of Philippine Cultural College (PCC)–Caloocan Campus on May 8, 2026, as students showcased their talents during the closing ceremony and debut performance of the 24 Festive Drum Intensive Workshop.

The event, themed “Rhythms of the Seasons, Long-lasting China-Philippines Friendship,” marked the successful conclusion of a three-day intensive training workshop led by renowned Malaysian instructors from “Soul Impact Percussion Performing Arts.” It also officially launched the PCC Performance Drum Club, highlighting the school’s commitment to cultural preservation and artistic excellence.

The activity was initiated and jointly organized by the PCC College Alumni Association and PCC, attracting school administrators, alumni leaders, teachers, students, and guests from the Filipino-Chinese community.

Among the distinguished attendees were PCC Principal Dr. Polly W. Sy, PCC Alumni Association Chairman Mr. Carlos Tan, Vice Chairman Mr. Ben Bairan, PCC Vice President for Caloocan Campus Dr. Ester C. Lim, Alumni Director and program coordinator Ms. Ellen Bairan, Ms. Aileen Chiu-Sio, and Chinese Supervisor Liu Xiao Ling, who also served as the event host.

Special guests from Malaysia, instructors Chin Chun Ket and Goh Xiang, traveled to the Philippines to conduct the training. Through their guidance, students learned not only drum techniques and rhythmic coordination but also values such as discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and focus.

The audience applauded enthusiastically as the students transformed from beginners into synchronized performers capable of delivering powerful rhythmic presentations.

In her speech, Dr. Polly W. Sy emphasized PCC’s commitment to holistic education rooted in “virtue, intelligence, physical health, group harmony, beauty, and labor.” She explained that the 24 Festive Percussion Art represents not only performance but also the spirit of Chinese culture through harmony, cooperation, and resilience.

Dr. Sy also thanked the PCC Alumni Association and the Malaysian coaches for their support and dedication. She expressed hope that more internationally oriented cultural programs would continue to provide students with broader opportunities for growth and development.

Meanwhile, PCC Alumni Association Chairman Mr. Carlos Tan highlighted the importance of cultural education, stating that education is not only about academics but also about preserving traditions and values. He noted that the alumni association actively supported the project from planning to implementation to help establish a unique cultural identity for PCC.

The event also received strong support from overseas Chinese communities. Mr. Chen Xunji and Mr. Chen Qing Long of Malaysia’s Klang Chinese School Alumni Association donated 26 sets of festive drums and drumsticks to support the newly formed drum club.

During the ceremony, plaques of appreciation were awarded to Coaches Chin Chun Ket and Goh Xiang for their contributions to cultural and artistic education. Certificates and recognitions were also presented to students who showed dedication and perfect attendance throughout the workshop.

The highlight of the program was the students’ debut performance titled “Drum Beat Stirred up Mountains and Sea,” a dynamic presentation symbolizing cultural friendship and unity between China, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Their synchronized movements, energetic stage presence, and thunderous drumbeats drew emotional reactions and loud applause from the audience.

PCC announced that the newly established PCC Performance Drum Club will officially perform again during the school’s 103rd Foundation Anniversary Celebration on June 21 at East Ocean Seafood Restaurant.

The school also shared its vision of developing the drum club into one of PCC’s major cultural programs, helping students grow artistically while strengthening cultural identity, teamwork, humility, and resilience.

In recent years, PCC has continuously promoted diversified education by expanding opportunities in arts, sports, science, technology, and international cultural exchange. The formation of the PCC Performance Drum Club marks another milestone in the school’s dedication to preserving cultural heritage and nurturing globally minded students.
